  1. I've seen Helen Mirren in a picture (somewhere else) that left me speechless. She looked stunning in the grey gown(same as the one in the third picture)and with a majestic hairdo. After all, Catherine was Russia's most iconic empress and she should look accordingly.
Jason Clarke who plays her lover, looks very masculine (second picture).

    1. She did play many other queens in her career, including both Elizabeths :) I'm surprised they cast her in this one as the real Catherine was extremely fat in her late years, not thin like Helen but I'm guessing the audience wouldn't watch a fatter woman cavorting with younger lads?

  2. Of course the real Catherine wasn't a twig. Wasn't being hefty a way they showed off their wealth back then?

    1. I think she just had an appetite both for food and men :) You can't really blame her when it was all given to her on a plate. Speaking of food, she was the first empress to bring potatoes, beets and some other veggies to Russia which helped them feed the poor who were dying in millions prior to that. She ordered all of her gentry to plant those veggies in their fields for villagers and slaves.

    3. Both yes and not :) She also increased the number of enslaved villagers as she was giving out estates to her ex lovers and friends like crazy to get rid of them, which increased the number of landlords and made tons of people enslaved under them, sadly. She really did do a lot for the country in terms of turning it into the leading European power and increasing the number of citizens tenfold if not more, she also turned her imperial courts into something above the rang of Versailles and Shoenbrunn but she did not much care for the poorest ones... she was German by origin after all... Her son Paul hated her so much that he tried to erase everything she did after she died.
