JOAQUIN PHOENIX OFFERED THE ROLE OF HULK IN "THE AVENGERS"
Last week Marvel announced that they don't want Edward Norton appearing as the Incredible Hulk anymore in their movies and that they will search for a new actor who could be a more cooperative member of "The Avengers" cast. As you know "The Avengers", directed by Josh Whedon , will be a movie gathering all the biggest super heroes in one place which means Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Junior as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor together in the same movie. I'm not sure does this mean that they find Edward Norton a problematic actor who can't work well with other stars, but he is officially off the project now. But Marvel wasn't grieving for too long, according to today's freshest rumors, they have already offered the role of The Incredible Hulk to no other but semi-retired Joaquin Phoenix. Apparently Joaquin is currently thinking about it, since it would mean that he won't just appear in "The Avengers" film, but also in other movies from the Hulk franchise. Although I quite like Joaquin, I must admit I prefer Edward or Eric Bana in the role.
Wasn't he retired already? What an inconsistent person.
ReplyDeletehuh. this kind of peeves me off. I'm with you in that i like Joaquin, but really enjoyed Norton as Bruce Banner. Bana did a good job too, though the movie was sub par.
ReplyDelete@Jaccsy
ReplyDeletewell, this doesn't mean he'll come back from retirement :))
@Falen
yep, I also agree that although Bana was great, his movie wasn't.
I rather enjoyed Ed Norton in the role, but I could see Phoenix doing a fine job with it. He has a certain intensity which could be brilliantly conveyed as anger... and we wouldn't like him when he's angry.
ReplyDeleteIsn't he a little too crazy for the role? He did earn worst guest ever on the Letterman show for his odd and crazy appearance.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me wonder why not Ed Norton again. I guess we'll never know. Hey, I though Phoenix was doing his music thing for life and giving up acting!
ReplyDelete@j.m.neeb
ReplyDeleteyes, he has hidden anger in him ... he was amazing as the evil Commodus in GLADIATOR
@Alex
crazy as Hulk? :)))
@Lydia
we all thought that, and maybe he really is doing that, but we've already reported about a few roles he might do in the future.
I actually like the idea of Joaquin in the role. As others have said, he can play a darker side a bit better than Ed Norton did (though I think Ed was better than Eric Bana). Guess we'll have to see how it goes.
ReplyDeleteEdward Norton is one of my favorite actors, but I didn't even know he'd been in a Hulk movie. Shows how much I keep up with things. Joaquin is a fine actor and the rest of the line up sounds good.

I liked norton in the role. I don't think Johnny Cash is right for it. What about Peter Krause from Parenthood.
ReplyDelete@Eric
ReplyDeleteyep, Eric, we shall have to wait and see, if he takes the role off course :)
@Arlee
:))) well that's why I'm here to keep you updated :)
@Budd
well, Peter Krause is mainly a TV actor so this could be a new thing for him :)
Mmmm, not sure how I feel about Phoenix. He CAN act, sure, but sometimes that's not enough. You have to WANT too.
ReplyDeleteYou know the Hulk movie franchise has never been very successful compared to Marvel's other series (Spider-man, Iron Man and X-Men). I have a feeling they keep cycling through the lead actors attempting to find someone whose going to bring the same big bucks, and while Norton brought in better critical reviews and a little better box office it's still wasn't what they wanted. Frankly that's the fault of Marvel and the fact that The Hulk films have been mediocre in terms of story, plus the character itself isn't that interesting, it's a CGI Jolly Green Giant! I think they believe Phoenix will bring in a bigger crowd simply because everyone will want to see his return to the big screen. Personally I think he could do an outstanding job, but I doubt the story will still be anything to talk about if the first two films are any indication. Personally I think they need to give up on The Hulk and move onto something they can do without having the character completely CGI.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked to read Ed Norton got dropped from the role as I thought he did a good job in his turn at it. I hope they pick one and stick with him and not do the whole Batman thingy with Keaton/Kilmer/Clooney/Bale.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing what Joaquin will do with the role. Of course my first choice for the role would have to be Robert Pattinson.
Yeah, just kidding!
Interesting. I really liked Eric and Edward in the role too.
ReplyDeleteOkay Phoenix is a joke. I knew that whole phase was a total act. Once he gets offered millions, he will take it.
ReplyDeleteThis is a mistake. Edward Norton is one of the greatest actors in Hollywood, imo and I thought he did a fine job as the Hulk.
@RaShelle
ReplyDeleteyep, wanting it would be the key ingredient :))
@Answer
I'm with you, Answer, it's not so about the actors as it is about the fact that Hulk just isn't that interesting himself. People want to see handsome muscles, great costume, elegant action, while Hulk is just a bunch of green mass and lot of anger. He's great as a supporting character, not as the lead one.
@Tom
Oh, you kinda got me with that Pattinson joke at the end :) I thought you were serious before I read the last line :)
@Michael
ReplyDeleteyep, Mike, I think most people liked them too.
@Cheeseboy
heh, maybe it really is a cunning strategy of his :) And there must be some hidden reason why they don't want Norton anymore, but I'm not sure what it is. They said it's not about the money.
I hope my precious Joaquin goes back to normal soon...
ReplyDeletehey, Angie, haven't seen you in ages :) We hope pretty much the same :)
ReplyDeleteI love both Bana and Norton as HULK, but Joaquin's possible casting is brilliant. It hit me out of left field when I first heard it. I miss Joaquin, so his return to acting is most welcomed! Typically, this isn't a franchise I look forward to the most, but with the right cast, I enjoyed it very much.
ReplyDeleteDez - been out of town and on vacay! back to the grind now and catching up on my favie blogs :)
ReplyDelete@Flixy
ReplyDeleteI reckon you of all would love Joaquin :)
@Angie
nice to have you back :)
I understand why they would drop Norton though. The stories about his interference with the editing of movies is legendary by now and I don't think that would have been a good fit for a film that is tying a bunch of Marvel characters together.
ReplyDeleteI like Phoenix, but I love Norton! He was better than Bana, and Phoenix just doesn't have the look or the powerful eyes for Hulk.

@MC
ReplyDeletedidn't know about that side of him, but I did read the statement Norton issued yesterday on his Facebook, and the formal one from his agent. They are extremely angry with Marvel's agent for issuing such a derogatory statement about him last week.
@Michele
I know you love Norton :)
I haven't seen either of these films, but I'd take Norton over Phoenix any day...
ReplyDeleteI know you would take him any day, Kristin :))
ReplyDeleteLooks a little different than he did when he played Johnny Cash! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he'll pull this 1 off just fine.
he does, Lisa :) this is his younger pic :)
ReplyDeleteDezmond, he developed a reputation during American History X... where he basically did an end around of director Tony Kaye and cut the film himself.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that, MC, it throws a new light on his professional image.
ReplyDeleteEven though Joaquin is good but I still love Edward for the role..!Marvel should get Norton again..
