IS UNIVERSAL PREPARING FIRST BIG STUDIO GAY ROMANTIC COMEDY WITH BILLY EICHNER AND JUDD APATOW? OLGA KURYLENKO, LAMBERT WILSON TO STAR IN FRENCH THRILLER THE TRANSLATORS!

After Crazy Rich Asians became the first big Asian romcom done by major US studios, will a big gay romance movie be the next step? Variety reports today that Universal has set Nick Stoller to direct an untitled romantic comedy which would see Billy Eichner both writing and starring in the story of two gay men who have commitment problems and are attempting a relationship. Judd Apatow is producing. Billy Eichner, who is openly gay privately as well, is currently starring in Netflix comedy series Friends from College and will also lend his voice to crazy meerkat Timon in Disney's live action version of The Lion King directed by Jon Favreau. He was nominated for an Emmy award three times for his own sketch series.

As you know, your trusted spy works as a book translator and I can tell you that the job can be unusual sometimes. A few years ago when one of Dan Brown's new books was sold to foreign publishers, their translators from all the bigger markets were flown to Italy and locked there in a villa for two months without any contact with the outside world so that no information would leak about the new book.

Something like that happens in new thriller THE TRANSLATORS coming from France later this year and starring Olga Kurylenko, Alex Lawther, Lambert Wilson and Eduardo Noriega in the story of nine translators, hired to translate the eagerly awaited final book of a best selling trilogy, who are confined in a luxurious bunker. When the first ten pages of the top secret manuscript appear online, the dream job becomes a nightmare -

  1. I would hope that it would do well, but we still have many here in the US that would not support a gay rom-com. You know, those who want to shove their Christian values down our throats. But, if the story line is good and there's lots of humor thrown in, I could be wrong.

    I could not imagine being locked away for months with other people, even in my own line of work. Toss in a thief, that would be pure hell for me.

    1. Love, Simon did quite well on the box office, so maybe this one could do even better with the right casting in the other male lead. But one never knows these days.

      I'd totally be a suitable person for that kind of translation job, wish I was around when they did that with Dan Brown's book, I'd be the perfect one to be sent to a secluded villa to work there for months :)

    2. Love Simon drew in the younger college crowd and Millennials, which are more accepting of the gay community. But, with the right casting, like you said, I do think an older actor could sway an older audience to check it out.

  2. Translation and translators are interesting topics, and there are some good movies out there dealing with them.

    Nine? That's a lot. It poses the question of how is the work divided among them, how it gets coordinated etc..
    The plot doesn't sound too appealing, but the outcome might surprise.

    1. those would be nine translators from nine different countries as you can see from the little flags on their desks. With this big books they usually send to isolation only the translators from major markets (France, Germany, Italy, China, Russia etc) because the release of the book in their countries is usually simultaneous with the US release. The rest of us usually get the manuscripts for translation a bit later on. At least in last few years as the danger of manuscripts leaking online has grown with the development of the internet. In the old days, some ten years ago, I remember I used to get manuscripts for upcoming bestsellers a year ahead of the US release, not anymore....
