SEAN BEAN, COLIN FARRELL, SAOIRSE RONAN, BURAK OZCIVIT, KENAN IMIRZALIOGLU IN IRISH TURKISH EPIC "FAMINE" ON FAMOUS 19TH CENTURY FAMINE IN IRELAND

Interesting news come from Turkey: beside the hot gossip on Brad Pitt being offered $2 million to play a European general fighting against sultan Suleyman in THE MAGNIFICENT CENTURY, the most popular historical TV saga around The Balkans in recent few years, there's also some info on FAMINE,  a joint Irish Turkish film production which would depict the story of the Ottoman Empire’s aid to Ireland during the great famine period in Ireland between 1845 and 1851. Sean Bean, Saoirse Ronan and Colin Farrell are possible cast members in the story of how the Ottoman Empire sent aid to the emerald isle in Ireland at great potato
famine in 1845 which claimed nearly 1 million lives. The production should start this Autumn and will also include some Turkish stars Burak Özçivit (he's currently hiding from the Turkish public after his girlfriend recently caught him naked in bed with his best male friend) and Kenan İmirzalıoğlu. According to "The Irish Sun", FAMINE plot will focus on a love story between Fatih (Burak), an Ottoman sailor, and Mary (Saoirse), an Irish girl, during the Great famine and the period when Ottoman’s aid to Ireland arrived. Turkish star Kenan İmirzalıoğlu would play Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid.

STORY FROM HISTORY
The whole idea begun when one of the producers of the film noticed the northwestern Irish city of Drogheda’s coat of arms included a crescent and star. The Irish famine first began in 1845 due to blight on Ireland’s main source of food — the potato, and lasted until 1851, resulting in the deaths of a million people and the immigration of more than 2 million citizens. Ultimately, the famine caused Ireland’s population to drop from 8 million to 5 million. According to "National Turk" Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid decided to send 10,000 pounds in aid to Ireland after being informed of how devastating the famine was on the island (some claim it was just a Turkish attempt to soften their image of barbaric invaders since in that part of history they had half of southern Europe enslaved under their tyrannical rule). However, Britain’s Queen Victoria decided to
accept only a thousand pounds in aid. In response, Sultan Abdülmecid secretly sent five ships full of food, as well as cash, to Ireland in order to help the Irish, who were shunned by England. Because the Ottoman ships could not approach Dublin’s port after their long journey to ıreland, they changed their course, bringing their food instead to the lovely seaside town of Drogheda. The Irish town of Drogheda had adopted the Star & Crescent as their emblem in gratitude to the people of Ottoman Empire. With this generous act the Ottoman Empire gained the appreciation of the local public.
CAST TITBITS
Turkish heartthrob Burak Burak Özçivit actually stars in the above mentioned Turkish historical soap THE MAGNIFICENT CENTURY, playing Bali Bey, one of sultan Suleyman's generals. Saoirse Ronan will star in another epic project - TESTAMENT OF YOUTH, in which a British woman recalls coming of age during World War I.Colin Farrell will also have another epic project in the future - WINTER'S TALE, enchanting fantasy story set in 19th Century and present-day Manhattan which revolves around a thief, a dying girl, and a flying white horse.

  1. "Famine" sounds excellent -- looking forward to it! I've never heard of this bit of Irish/Turkey history before. Queen Victoria, you auld bitch you! It's true, the Brits encouraged the Famine and didn't raise a finger to help.

And I'm glad there's going to be a new movie of Vera Brittain's "Testament of Youth" -- I saw the British TV series that was made back in the 1970s (I think it was) and it was excellent. I love WWI stories and we are getting very close to the centennial of the Great War's 1914 commencement, aren't we?

    5. Dear DEZMOND,
sorry for using your blog for this explanations.but it saddens me that some foreigns misinformation about my country and my people. I felt to defense them.

first ı want to say that ı am a muslim but ı am not against gays.everyone lives How want to live .I'm living in free and secular republic not in İran or afganistan..one of say that "poor guy in muslim country." we Turks more tolerant than you think..ı give you three names whoes are very popular (not only celebrity that day are a stars and divas of turkey..) 1. bulent ersoy. he (she) great singer of turkey for more than twenty years. she is like madonna for us.. Previously he was transvestite. Twenty years ago he was changed to female gender with operation. get a female ıd card and He married twice. no one never dared to insult him..

      2. Zeki Müren. he passed away ten years ego.if you search his name in net you can see that the photos of him the costumes he worn explains by his sexual preference. but we turks always remember him with respect,

      3. Cemil ipekçi.The famous fashion designer of turkey.. he was never hide that he is a gay. eveybody knows that he lives in turkey with his male lover ..

if you want judge a country it is not enough by looking at the outside of a country and you need more information..because in the world there is no black or whites..the word is gray..if humanity realized it. the word would be more peaceful place .

  4. I had no idea that the Irish famine killed that many people! Their population really dropped from 8 million to 5 million? I know that wasn't all deaths and most immigration...but still. That's crazy!

    1. yes, many countries had such huge tragedies. My country for example lost about 2 to 3 million people in both WWs and we have only 7 million in total. After the WW1 most of the villages and cities were left totally without men.

I'm not so sure about Saoirse Ronan's vest? piece of armour? Looks odd and non-functional ;)

  12. Famine sounds interesting - it's a story I was told a lot about at school because a lot of Irish immigrants settled in South Wales to escape the famine, so there was a lot of Irish heritage where I lived.

    1. Poor Brad Pitt. Oh how the mighty have fallen. Kirsten Stewart makes 20 million per film fresh off the cheating bandwagon of Pattinson and those awesome Twilight movies. And Brad Pitt, once voted the most handsome man in the world for two years, now can barely get 2 million for a role in a second-hand film.

I guess beauty really does fade with time.

darling, those two million are for a five minute scene or one episode of the show, not a film :PP

have you ever watch msgnificent century and say that second hand. this series broadcasted more than 60 countries. in every country have a higher ratings. (its raiting higher than american series like dr.house or mentaslist in this countries)they pay 75.000 dolar for each episodes.every episode budget more than 250.0000 euro.in my eyes magnificent century more beatiful than twilight. (ı dont talk about the novel but the movie for teenagers.)
