HOLLYWOOD SPY'S SPOTLIGHT ON JANUARY MOVIES PART TWO: "UNDERWORLD AWAKENING" WITH KATE BECKINSALE & "RED TAILS" SECOND WORLD WAR EPIC!

As you know, January is, similarly to August and other months at the end of a big season, a dumpster for bad movies. Not many good ones this January either. Beside some of the January 2012 films I've already covered ALBERT NOBBS, THE DIVIDE, THE GREY, EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE, check out these two bellow as well.

SELENE IS BACK
The latest installment in the super popular vampire saga UNDERWORLD AWAKENING is ready to hit cinemas January 20th and this time the human forces have finally discovered the existence
of the Vampire and Lycan clans commencing a war to eradicate both species. The fourth part in the saga brings a stunning new dimension to the epic battle between Vampires and Lycans as the first film in the franchise to be shot in 3D. Kate Beckinsale, the star of the first two films in the saga, returns in her role of the vampire warrioress Selene who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species. Although the script was written by Kate's husband director Len Wiseman who helmed the previous parts, this time the film is directed by Bjorn Stein and Mans Marlind.
The cast includes Stephen Rea, Charles Dance, Michael Ealy, amazing Kris Holden Ried, whom we remember from THE TUDORS, and young Theo James who takes the lead male role in the film.
Beside her trademark roles in UNDERWORLD saga, VAN HELSING and PEAR HARBOR, gorgeous British rose Kate Beckinsale can't seem to find a successful project. Will she manage that in the future? She will appear next to Collin Farrell in the sf remake of TOTAL RECALL, and in two rather insignificant little projects HAPPY HOLIDAYS, KATHERINE SLOANE next to Sigourney Weaver and in THE TRIALS OF CATE MCCULLOUGH.

RED TAILS
Also coming out January 20th is a film HOLLYWOOD SPY has already mentioned a couple of times. If you like war epics you probably won't miss RED TAILS set in 1944. while World War II rages and the fate
of the free world hangs in the balance. Meanwhile the black pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program are courageously waging two wars at once – one against enemies overseas, and the other against discrimination within the military and back home. Racial prejudices have long held ace airman Martin Easy Julian and his black pilots back at base - leaving them with little to do but further hone their flying skills - while their white counterparts are shipped out to combat after a mere three months of training. Mistakenly deemed inferior and assigned only second-rate planes and missions, the pilots of Tuskegee
have mastered the skies with ease but have not been granted the opportunity to truly spread their wings. The cast of the film includes Cuba Gooding Jr. Terrence Howard, rnb star Ne-Yo, Bryan Cranston and others.

  1. I've never heard of the Underworld movie. I'm pretty vampired out, so that one's a no-go for me. Red Tails has everything I like. A WWII movie (yay), a great story and Cuba Gooding Colour me there.

  2. well, UNDERWORLD movies were usually released in the dumpster January place :) so it's no wonder you haven't heard of them, Anne, but they were hits, especially when they hit DVD market.

  3. Now these are my movies! LOL I don't know what you're going to do with me, Dez. You know how I love my beasties. Excellent spotlight and I am glad to see that Scott Speedman is not in this new Underworld. No presence for me. This Theo James looks like he could really rev things up.

    What a cast for Red Tails and what an amazing story. I have been dying to see this ever since I first read about it here.

  4. I'm really not in love with the vampire stuff. It's been beaten to death by Twilight, and now it seems that we have an influx of movies abou that very subject. Not happy.

    But a war movie. That's where it's at.

  5. The vampires need to DIE! I hate those stupid things, been done to death, pun intended. Plus these movies are so so to begin with. Red Tails might be ok though. I hope it is and Cuba gets out of direct to dvd hell.

  6. Never have seen an Underworld move, but I'm liking the outfit. :)

    Red Tails will be one I'll catch on DVD for sure.

  9. Hope you had a great holiday weekend, Dezz...I'm going to have to lay off the sweets for a while...LOL...well, maybe not! Have a great Monday.

  10. Yep, Melsy, these are more kick ass than the ones from yesterday :) You didn't like Scott Speedman? :) I think I know why you don't like him. I myself kinda like him, he has something very sweet and innocent in himself which I love a lot, especially with that sleepy voice of his. I'm not sure why he has gone off the radar in Hollywood almost totally. I don't think I've seen him in anything for ages. Theo James seems nice too :)

    yep, here at HOLLYWOOD SPY we do not love vampire and dark stuff either, especially not the TWILIGHT crapfest. But we do have hots for Beckinsale :)

    @Pat
    I think the cat needs to come up with a plan how to eradicate vampires from Hollywood. We racoons and penguins would put our forces to your disposal in that mission :)

    I seen just the first one, I think :) It's a film for special mood, mostly watched by computer geeks and game wizards :) The outfit is lovely, especially the embroided corset :)

    @Interwebs
    that is what the whole world thinks :)

    go Kate, go Kate! Although with her choice of roles it doesn't seem she is going anywhere :(

    @Lizzy
    yep, detox is what most people need after the holidays, but not me, I'm a disciplined little mouse who never has food in his house and thus can't feast on it and get fat :)))

  14. I've never watched an Underworld movie. I'm not entirely sick of vampires, but I'm giving them a break.

    Red Tails is more my cup of tea.

    Happy New Year!

  15. I like Scott well enough, just not in this particular role. It seemed too harsh for his presence and so he faded for me in these films. His movies these last couple of years just did not get wide play. He's in The Vow with Channing Tatum, so maybe he'll make a resurgence. :)

  16. I love Underworld! :D Nice film..

  18. So there killing off Michael? Seems like a odd decision to me, but whatever. I will probably see that one on dvd

    As for Red Tails, i'm not a huge WW2 movie fan but i think if it can cover the topic of discrimination it may differentiate itself from the pack. Although why they put Ne-yo in the cast is beyond me

  19. Kate Beckinsale could remake BioDome and I would go check it out!

  20. @Medeia
    you didn't miss much, Medeia :)
    Happy New Year to you as well!

    @Melsy
    ah, yes, I totally forgot about his gig in THE VOW. But he is playing a bad boy in that one, not sure how will that fit with his cute image. By the way I was watching some show about some doctors who work on some tropical island which stars Martin Henderson, and I immediately thought of you, thinking he might be your type of hunk :) He has also gone missing for some reason

  21. @Come at me
    glad you think so :)

    @David
    glad you like it :) Hope you had nice holidays :)

    @Pesos

  22. @Dirty
    ooooh, I will watch the film only for Ne Yo :)

    @Steve
    oh, lord, Steve, where did you come up with BIODOME :))))

  23. Selene sucks. The actress that plays her (Kate Beckinsale) has the same face in every shot. No emotion. Ever. She's like a mannequin in a tight black plastic bodysuit which is the only reason men go to these films.

  24. ANOTHER Underworld movie? Holy cow. I'm just all amazed. And I tell ya, you listed off those movies she's been in, and I have to ask... is it the agent or the actor? Who's picking these stinkers? :D

    Have a super new year, Dezzy~

  25. hehe Underworld should be very good movie ;] I hope so ;]

    great blog and nice post :)

  26. @Michael
    it's true that Kate often has the same facial expression. She needs to work more on that.

    @Leigh
    ooh, I actually loved VAN HELSING, it was so wonderfully trashy :)

    @Choms
    hey, thanks for the follow, number 501 :)

  27. oooh! red tails sounds interesting... though i'm not a big war movie fan.

  28. I agree, Vics on both points :)

  29. Kate's had such a strange career turn with these UNDERWORLD movies. I liked her better in SERENDIPITY. I've only seen the first UNDERWORLD, though.

    ReplyDelete
  30. she does seem to be lost. She needs to built up another direction. She can't remain vampire forever, she needs either a romantic turn or to show her acting skills in real dramas (although I'm not sure she has such depth, she was bad in LAUREL CANYON with Christian Bale). She could be a great romcom star.

  31. I'm definitely excited about Red Tails...it looks like a fun-filled actioner. Seeing Kate Beckinsale in a skin-tight PVC suit is always enjoyable but she's a terrible actress and I've never got into the Underworld films.

  32. it's sad to admit it, but it is true, she is not as bad as Mila Jovovich, but she isn't much better :( But unlike Mila, she has charisma and that sexy voice.
