JAMES MCAVOY & TOM CRUISE IN "AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS". FIRST PIC FROM "FRIGHT NIGHT". NEW TV SHOWS "NEVERLAND", "SANDMAN", "ALCATRAZ"

Now here's a new casting treat: I've already mentioned recently that Guillermo Del Toro will direct "At the Mountains of Madness", adventurous horror about a scientific expedition to Antarctica which discovers fantastic and horrific ruins and a dangerous secret beyond a range of mountains taller than the Himalayas. The hottest rumor is that Universal wants James McAvoy in the lead role in the adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft book, while del Toro wants Tom Cruise. Without any deeper thought, I vote for McAvoy.

"MovieWeb" has published the first very cool banner picture of David Tennant in the remake of "Fright Night" which follows Charlie (Anton Yelchin), a teen convinced that his new neighbor (Colin Farrell) is a vampire. His disbelieving mom (Toni Collette), will fall under the vampire's spell. David Tennant will play a Las Vegas magician whose show revolves around horror-movie imagery and who claims to be a vampire expert, but when the teen turns to him for assistance, he's less than helpful.

In fresh TV news for today - SyFy will start shooting "Neverland" mini series next week, an origin story of Petar Pan with Rhys Ifans as James Hook, Anna Friel and Bob Hoskins in the cast. Fox has bought the rights on "Lockes and Key" the new mystery show I've mentioned last week, and which is written by Joe Hill, Stephen King's son. Eric Kripke, the author of "Supernatural" will probably adapt popular comic "Sandman" into a TV show which will tell the tale of Morpheus, the Lord of the Dreaming, a deity who personifies dreams. This mix of fantasy and mythology also follows the Endless, a group of powerful brothers and sisters named Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium. And J.J. Abrams together with one of the "Lost" producers is currently trying to sell their new TV series entitled "Alcatraz" to one of the major TV networks. The show will focus on the notorious island prison in San Francisco Bay.

Last year's Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner, Toni Collette will get some new colleagues in the third season of the super intelligent show "The United States of Tara" in which she plays a woman with more than five totally different personalities: Eddie Izzard will play Tara's brilliant psychology professor who is at first skeptical, but becomes fascinated with Tara as a subject, leading him to further explore her condition. Frances Conroy will guest star as Tara's mother in law, a recluse with a compulsive hoarding problem.

  1. No, not Tom Cruise!!! And the remake of Fright Night disappoints me. What was wrong with the original?
    A Sandman series sounds promising. Surprised no one's taken on the best selling series until now.

  2. yes, I'm with you on Cruise, Alex. I didn't watch the original FRIGHT NIGHT and I like the cast in this one, so I'll watch it. I think SANDMAN is too bizarre and to complicated so that could be the reason why it wasn't picked up before.

  3. I don't know who James MacAvoy is so I'll trust the director's choice.

    he is one of the best British actors, Lee ;)

    @Vics
    Each TARA episode last for just about 24 minutes, so I'm sure you'll menage somehow, Vics :))

  7. filming isn't set to start until May of next year, so neither actor may land the part. McAvoy's set to tackle the role of the young Professor X in X-Men: First Class while Cruise has Mission: Impossible 4 starting next month and the Les Grossman spinoff at some point after that.

  11. Wow, bunches of news today! Must say, aside from him being balls frickin crazy, I do enjoy Tom Cruise as an actor. But that's about it. As for Eric Kripke and a new TV show, freaking awesome. I love Supernatural, and was more than impressed when he stepped down after his 5 year run was done, as he said his vision was for 5 years of the show. Hopefully he can make this good.

    yes, it's always possible that none of them will get the role, this is just a wish list of the studio and the director.

    @Andrew
    not if you ask Del Toro :)

    @Cesta
    oh, yes, it would be wonderful seeing James in HOBBIT!

  15. Hi DEZMOND - I really hope they go with James McAvoy.

    The United States of Tara - What a great pic first of all. I think she is talented! I had to really look to see her in all of them - especially the bubblegum and hat-wearing ones. She nailed the individual personalities.

  16. I have never seen the US of Tara but it looks really interesting.

  17. @Shells
    yes, one of her personalities is a puritan housewife called Alice, one is a white trash hillbilly and a man at the same time called Buck, one is some kind of crazy beast called Gimmie, one is a promiscuous teenager (with the bubble gum) called T, and one is a hippie psychotherapist with a Jewish accent called Shoshana :))) No one could play all of those characters as Toni Collette can.

    @Clarissa
    you should, it's super intelligent and creative.

  18. Not a huge fan of Tom Cruise anymore. What a strange pic you have of him. I'm surprised it's taken this long to do something on Sandman. That should be great. I loved the comic.

  19. The pic is from the old times when the world still considered him sexy and attractive and when we didn't know he was weird, crazy and spooky :)

  20. Well McAvoy is a hundred times the better actor, but I'm not keen on this Del Toro project. I thought at first they're going to star together in one movie and my initial reaction is 'Why James, why???' :)
