MARVEL TO MAKE CHEAPER FILMS WITH THEIR LESS POPULAR HEROES

Although Marvel Studios are preparing for us a number of expensive comic book adaptations like "Thor", "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "The Avengers", according to "CHUD" they are also planning to make films with modest budgets, from $20 million to $40 million. Such movies would follow some of the less popular Marvel's characters such as Doctor Strange, Ka-Zar, Luke Cage, Dazzler and Power Pack. This would apparently give Marvel much more flexibility, since such movies with the budget of 20-40 million could bring them money if made right. And at a lower budget these movies don't need to be quite so mainstream. A 20 million dollar film can take much bigger risks than one that costs a hundred million more than that, as seen currently with "Kick-Ass".

  1. This is certainly the generation of comic book adaptations. I just finished making a Top Superhero Movies list and didn't have a whole lot of movies to choose from since there haven't been many made. But I think that that's rapidly, rapidly changing. It seems like everything hero-like these days has been adapted from a comic book.

  2. Here it comes! Here it comes!!!!!!

    UNI: THE MOTION PICTURE!

    Hey, I'm as popular as some of these guys, I think I deserve my own movie.

  3. Uni, I can't quite picture what kind of superhero costume would the lead star in UNI:MOTION PICTURE wear, but I'd sure like to see it :) Would there be any tights? A cape?

    @Casey
    that's what happens when Tinseltown gets short with new ideas!

  4. Very true. It's a new handy fallback. I can't stand re-makes either. I saw the preview for "Death at a Funeral" and wanted to vomit.

  5. I'm sure they will see how the first couple movies do before churning them out at a frantic pace.

  6. This hardly seems fair. Why go all out for the "bigger" ones and let the less popular ones drift in their wake?

    Seems to me, that by making the movies, it will be bringing attention to the characters. And if the film is well made and not some cheap, low budget crap, it will bring in the ratings.

    But...this is just my humble opinion.

    BTW Dez, there's an award for you over at my place :D

  7. @Casey
    that and the new trend of buying ideas from Asian movies. There's a bunch of movies in preproduction based on manga comics.

    @Alex
    off course :)

    @Dawn
    thanks on the award, I shall display it here in my award sidebar shelf :)

  8. I would like to see some of my favorite comic book characters on big screen. And wouldn't mind if they were made with smaller budget. We've seen (many times before) that small budget doesn't have to meen - "cheap" film, even in fantasy-adventure genre.

    Too bad those proposed/speculated (Marvel) superheroes are not really my favorite. Although I don't mind reading about them (in comics) as a part of some larger team.
    however, I could become interested in their films. Except for Power Pack. That one is a kids-only story.

  9. Bels, I agree with you, POWER PACK's was also my exception as well, it doesn't sound like a serious enough comic.

  12. LOLOL! Well visually i'm sure it would be "nice" ;)
    But pretty much that's all there is to dazzler. Looks with no substance, :)
